Like so many other women caught up in the SPA debacle, one option - or the only option - is to downsize and release some of the equity in our properties. But what are the difficult aspects of moving house?
You might have lived in the same home for decades and the house is full of memories which you think are in the house. We cannot face letting go of decades of accumulated belongings and all the attached memories. I've learned that we need to look at the house differently. Of course different rooms will remind us of parties we've held, children's birthdays and our Christmas celebrations; we might look at the garden with fondness and remember our children planting their first bulbs, or learning to ride a bike, but those memories don't suddenly disappear when we move house. We take them with us. We shouldn't underestimate the emotional impact that clearing and sorting a lifetime’s possessions will have: the process will involve rediscovering forgotten possessions, reliving memories that may be bitter-sweet and making dozens of decisions that will have permanent impact. I'm not saying it's easy, just acknowledging that those feelings are there. My difficulties are parting with things I've paid good money for, or think may be useful some day. I even kid myself that one day I'll use something for a craft project or refurbish or re-purpose it.
Have you done it? How did you do it?
